In the medical world today there is a lot of debate about whether your diet has an effect on acne. Many medical professionals say that the foods you eat do not have an effect. However, anecdotal evidence seems to say otherwise. Most people who suffer from acne will tell you that their skin gets worse if they consume certain foods (such as chocolate, curry or sugary snacks)
Why would this be? In the case of sugary foods, I believe the problem is caused by an insulin/hormone spike as excessive blood sugar causes insulin to be released. Eating foods like chocolate or drinking things like fizzy drink causes your blood sugar to spike and thus more insulin is released. This causes your body to produce other hormones to keep the balance and then your skin feels the full effect. Hormonal changes are one of the biggest causes of acne.
To see proof of my theory we only need to look at countries where a non-Western, "hunter-gatherer" diet is eaten. Acne is all but unheard of in these countries. However, in countries where a Western diet consisting of refined carbohydrates, processed meats and sugary snacks is eaten acne is a massive problem. Just think about it for a second and then it will hit you - diet has a massive effect on your skin! If this wasn't so then why are Westerners so much more prone to acne? Or is acne what defines us as Westerners? I think not!
Now that we've got that out of the way here are some simple things you can do to eat a lower GI/lower sugar, lower processed meat containing diet -
* Eat brown rice instead of white rice. Brown rice takes a few minutes longer but is far healthier, contains more nutrients and doesn't send such a massive spike of sugar around your bloodstream.
* Don't eat potato - ever! Potatoes are one of the biggest culprits in my opinion as they are simply a store of carbohydrate, nothing else. Eating a potato causes a massive insulin spike throughout your system so if you're looking for a healthier alternative try sweet potato (yes it sounds stupid but sweet potato is actually healthier for you!)
* Replace white bread with brown bread - White bread is like pure carbohydrate. Eat brown bread instead as it far less processed and contains healthy grains and other nutrients.
* Don't eat bacon, ham, salami or sausage - All these meats are highly processed and are just plain unhealthy. Try eating fish or chicken or beef instead (as long as it is not processed)
Changing your diet is easily one of the best homemade acne treatments around. Without a good diet there is no point in spending money on other acne treatments as you won't have a healthy body to apply them to!
