When searching for a productive avenue of certification in the IT field, the wide array of programs established by Microsoft offer a popular and highly effective choice. Whether the program in question is at the introductory level, as in the case of the Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST), or the more advanced level, such as Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) or the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), each of these certification programs provide significant practical knowledge and experience that satisfies an expansive array of professional demands. All three of these programs allow for an individual to achieve the status of a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), which carries a widely valued and instantly recognized status within the field.

Let's look at these programs more closely.

MCDST

  • Excellent starting point towards advancement within IT.
  • Designed primarily for individuals tasked with system support.
  • Covers all the material required to troubleshoot and maintain desktop environments running the Windows operating systems and various Microsoft desktop applications such as Microsoft Office.
  • Open to the widest group of potential candidates as possible, with only some basic grounding in computer hardware recommended, such as that offered by CompTIA's A%2B program or alternatively some prior experience in help desk support.
  • By completing the MCDST program, individuals will have attained not only their MCDST status but also their MCP credentials, thus making the program all the more alluring.

MCSA
  • Continues the IT certification track while upping the ante in expertise and knowledge.
  • The 2003 program itself consists of three core exams and one elective, which MCDST thoroughly satisfies.
  • Rather than concentrating on individual desktop support however, an MCSA is responsible for the administration, management, and maintenance of a larger overall computing environment.
  • This position demands more responsibilities, and the MCSA program is designed to allow an individual to excel within the role.

MCSE
  • Encompasses much of the material covered in MCSA, but expects the command of an even more unique set of skills.
  • While an MCSA is responsible for management and maintenance of a wider computing environment, an MCSE is tasked with planning, designing, and implementing the Windows server backend that serves as a foundation for an entire organization.
  • Requiring six core exams and one elective, the MCSE program is by far the most demanding, but also potentially the most rewarding.
  • Individuals possessing the MCSE certification are the most sought after by potential employers due to their proven expertise, knowledge, and experience.

Looking back at these three certifications, each serves as a valuable rung within the IT ladder. Whether a certified as an MCDST, an MCSA, or an MCSE, every individual holding one of these certifications will be in demand in establishing and maintaining an effective and productive computing environment.

By attending an official Microsoft IT Academy such as the Academy of Computer Education (ACE) in Greenbelt, MD that offers MCDST, MCSA, or MCSE, anyone interested in elevating their position on the IT ladder will have succeeded in putting their best foot forward.
